Local roundup: Waterford walks off with a 2-1 win over East Lyme in 8 in Babe Ruth 14 state tournament
Waterford — Jamison Waggoner pitched a complete game for Waterford in a 2-1 victory over East Lyme in eight innings Tuesday night in the winners’ bracket final of the Babe Ruth 14-year-old state tournament.
Waggoner allowed just three hits, striking out six, and Brooks Lane had two hits for Waterford, which improved to 3-0 in the tournament to advance to the championship round at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Waterford Babe Ruth Field.
Ethan Spinner pitched a complete game for East Lyme, scattering six hits. Jackson Cooley had a double and an RBI for East Lyme, which will play Thursday against the winner of a game Wednesday between Norwalk and Nonnewaug.
Junior Legion
• Andrew McElwee had four hits to lead Waterford’s Junior American Legion team to a 13-4 win Monday over Glastonbury. Colby Sheehan, Lucas Saunders, Josh Bergstrom and Lucas Racicot each had two of Waterford’s 15 hits.
Junior Division softball (ages 12-14)
• Stonington scored three runs on four hits in the first inning and went on to beat Haddam-Killingworth 7-5 Monday to win the Section 2 tournament being played in Stonington.
Stonington will begin play in the state final on Saturday in Orange, meeting the Section 1 champion.
In the first inning, Whitney Friend, Sara Slitt and Ainslie Zagol each singled and scored for Stonington. Shelby Stewart added a two-run single in the second and Slitt, Friend and Ava Nardone all had hits as two more runs scored in the third.
Ainslie Zagol pitched four innings, striking out three, and Sarah Previty came on in the fifth to preserve the win for Stonington, throwing three scoreless innings.
