The musical comedy ‘The Prom’ is staged at Chestnut Street Playhouse

Even if you don’t remember the Broadway version of the musical “The Prom,” perhaps you recall the 2020 movie adaptation that featured a little-known, up-and-coming cast. You know: Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key and Ariana DeBose.

In any case, the Chestnut Street Playhouse is now staging “The Prom,” starting tonight. The show boasts music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin.

The storyline begins with a quartet of Broadway actors whose careers are on the wane deciding they need a cause to bring them back to the spotlight. They find it when they hear about a high schooler in Indiana who is being prevented from taking her girlfriend to the prom by a homophobic PTA.

“The Prom” in Norwich is directed by Lisa Bono. The cast includes Allison Hall, Makayla O’Conner, Derek Corriveau, Maureen Pollard, Paul Botchis, Nicole Loser, Justin Carroll, Jon Peterson, Sharon Brouillard, Jordan Chenette, Tracy Land, Kody Mileski and Tristan Ournac.

Claire Humphrey, who is engaged to fellow cast member Kevin Cutsinger, is fluent in American Sign Language and will incorporate that into the show.

    “The Prom,” April 13-30, Chestnut Street Playhouse, 24 Chestnut St., Norwich; 7:30 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 2 p.m. Sun.; tickets $29.95 and $26.96 for students/seniors; https://csp.ludus.com/.
