Revisiting ‘Almost Famous’ at the O’Neill

Cameron Crowe, left, and Tom Kitt (Submitted)

This is going to be good.

Tom Kitt and Cameron Crowe are working on their stage musical version of Crowe’s acclaimed film “Almost Famous” at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford. As part of this workshop residency, there will be public staged readings of the musical starting Saturday.

“Almost Famous” was first a 2000 movie written and directed by Crowe and inspired in part by his teen years as a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine.

Kitt, whose credits include his Pulitzer-winning work on “Next to Normal,” collaborated with Crowe on the musical version of “Almost Famous,” which earned a Tony nomination during its short Broadway run in 2022-23. They will be further developing the piece at the O’Neill. Kitt said in a statement, “Cameron and I are thrilled that the O’Neill is giving us this wonderful opportunity to dive back into the world of Almost Famous. Having previously experienced the magic of the O’Neill, I know that our time there will be inspiring and transformative.”

Kitt developed his and John Logan’s musical “Superhero” at the O’Neill in 2017 and is now member of the O’Neill’s Board of Trustees.

“Almost Famous,” 7 p.m. Sat., Wed. and Nov. 18, Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Rufus & Margo Rose Barn Theater, 305 Great Neck Road, Waterford; $33; theoneill.org.
