Chestnut Street Playhouse presents a musical ‘Christmas Carol’

Cast members of the Chestnut Street Playhouse’s production of “A Christmas Carol: The Musical” (Submitted)

Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the rest of the “Christmas Carol” characters have a Dickens of a time in the classic holiday tale, which The Chestnut Street Playhouse in Norwich is staging starting Thursday.

They are presenting the musical version featuring music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and book by Ahrens and Mike Ockrent. Those three have had a lot of success. Menken is a legendary composer whose work ranges from “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast” for Disney to “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Sister Act” on Broadway. Ahrens was a writer and performer for “Schoolhouse Rock!” on ABC, and, on Broadway, she did the libretto for “Once on This Island.” The late Ockrent’s other work included the stage musicals “Me and My Girl” and “Crazy for You.”

At the Chestnut Street Playhouse, Lisa Bono directs the cast led by Derek Corriveau as Scrooge, Craig Blake as Bob Cratchit, Jon Peterson as Marley, Carl Canella as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Nichelle Rollins as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Yvette Charice as the Ghost of Christmas Future, and Jack Bernard as Tiny Tim.

“A Christmas Carol: The Musical,” Chestnut Street Playhouse, 24 Chestnut St., Norwich; runs Thursday through Dec. 17; showtimes 7:30 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 2 p.m. Sun.; tickets are $29.95 for adults, $26.96 for students and seniors; chestnutstreetplayhouse.org.
