Drama Works presents ‘The God of Hell’

Clockwise from top left: John Elsenbeck, Steve Spartano, Brian Cunningham, and Debi Freund, from Drama Works’ production of “The God of Hell.” (Submitted)

Drama Works Theatre Company in Old Saybrook does NOT go the path most traveled.

This resident theater company stages shows that you’re unlikely to see lots of other groups doing. Their latest production is Sam Shepard’s “The God of Hell,” which he wrote in response to 9/11.

In the production, which runs March 1-10, Frank and Emma have their own farm in Wisconsin. They take in an old friend of Frank’s named Haynes, who has fled from a secret government project. Not far behind him is a government bureaucrat, whose aggressive patriotism puts Frank, Emma and Haynes on the defensive.

Ed Wilhelms directs the cast featuring Debi Freund, Brian Cunningham, Steve Spartano, and John Elsenbeck.

Drama Works’ other upcoming 2024 productions are: “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress” by Alan Ball, “Mac Beth” adapted by Erica Schmidt from William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” “Two Rooms” by Lee Blessing, and “Venus in Fur” by David Ives.

“The God of Hell,” Drama Works Theatre Company, 323 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook; runs March 1-10; 7:30 p.m. Thurs. and Fri. and 2 p.m. Sat.; $27; dramaworkstheatre.org.
