Flock Theatre will stage a new production of Charlotte Bronte’s classic gothic romance “Jane Eyre,” adapted by Julie Butters, at New London’s historic Shaw Mansion May 17-19 and 24-26.

Originally scheduled to be performed in the Shaw Mansion in 2020, the show was waylaid due to the global pandemic and adapted into a Zoom film. Now in 2024, this version of “Jane Eyre” finally gets its live debut at the Shaw Mansion, directed by Flock’s Victor Chiburis. This will be the first Shaw performance for Flock since 2019’s “Pride & Prejudice.”

Shows are at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays at 11 Blinman St., New London. Tickets are $40. To reserve, visit flocktheatre.org/janeeyre.

Jane Eyre, an orphan in early 19th-century England, overcomes a loveless childhood to become governess to the ward of the enigmatic Mr. Rochester. Jane soon believes she’s found the home and the love she’s always yearned for, but Mr. Rochester’s dark secrets threaten to keep them apart.

Blending gothic romance with a powerful story of personal growth, “Jane Eyre” explores one woman’s struggle to find love and independence despite barriers of gender, class, and circumstance. Playwright Butters of Salem, Mass., portrays Jane, and Eric Michaelian of New London plays Mr. Rochester.

“Jane is fiercely determined to control her own destiny and stay true to her convictions despite immense external pressure,” says Butters, who previously adapted “Little Women” for Flock. “That makes her as compelling today as in 1847 when the novel was published.”
