Company in botched highway project going bankrupt

Rocky Hill (AP) - A company that supervised the botched Interstate 84 highway widening project in greater Waterbury is seeking bankruptcy protection, listing the state of Connecticut as its largest potential creditor.

The Maguire Group's petition, filed Oct. 24 in Miami, lists a potential claim of $15 million by the state of Connecticut as the result of a lawsuit the state filed against a contractor on a prison project in which Maguire served as designer. It also lists potential claims by Rhode Island totaling about $12 million on another project where Maguire served as the designer; and a potential claim of almost $7.9 million stemming from allegations raised by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The company has already paid a settlement over the Connecticut highway problems.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws help corporations reorganize, but do not liquidate their debts as under Chapter 7.

The Miami-based attorney handling the bankruptcy said Wednesday the company had not authorized him to discuss it publicly. A Connecticut transportation department spokesman says the department knew about it, but had no comment.
