Catch a tagged fish and win a prize

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is partnering with the outdoors retail company Cabela's and its supporting sponsors in the "Wanna Go Fishing for Millions?" national contest that begins Saturday.

The contest is being held in states that have Cabela's retail stores and awards prizes to anglers who catch specially tagged fish and enter the tag number at the Cabela's website. In Connecticut, DEEP is Cabela's state partner and has tagged a total of 40 fish (largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, and trout) in six bodies of water.

All the fish tagged by DEEP are winners. Product prizes include fishing gear and other outdoor equipment from Cabela's. Among the winning fish are grand prize winners that may qualify for bonus prizes based on the winning angler using or wearing sponsors' products when they catch a tagged fish. There is a maximum prize of $2 million. The contest runs through July 8.

To win, anglers must register before going fishing. Registration is available at Cabela's website: www.cabelas.com/fishformillions or at the Cabela's retail store in East Hartford. Cabela's will announce the list of lakes on their website Saturday.

More than 2,000 Connecticut residents participated in last year's "Wanna Go Fishing for Millions?" contest. Thirty-three fish were tagged at three water bodies, and there were 13 Connecticut winners. The largest prize awarded to a Connecticut participant was a $10,000 Cabela's shopping spree. Contest participants are reminded that all Connecticut fishing regulations and license requirements apply. For information, visit: www.ct.gov/deep/fishing.
