State police: Home invasion in Sharon leaves one dead

Sharon (AP) - Connecticut state police on Tuesday were looking for two men who forced their way into a home in Sharon and fatally shot a man they appeared to target in what troopers called an "isolated incident."

Lucas Vitalis, 23, was killed between 5 and 6 p.m. Monday in his mother's home in a sparsely populated area off Route 4, state police said. His mother, Rita Vitalis, was tied up during the home invasion, but wasn't harmed.

Lt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman, said the suspects and Lucas Vitalis knew each other. He said the shooting wasn't a random act, but he declined to elaborate. A possible motive wasn't released.

"It is rare for this to happen in a rural area like this," Vance said.

State police described the suspects as two white men who both have facial hair, and one of them was wearing a black T-shirt and light-colored pants.

Vance urged anyone who was in the area on Monday evening to call state police with information, no matter how trivial it seems.

State police said they were looking into the possibility that the shooting was drug-related.

State court records show no criminal histories for Lucas and Rita Vitalis.

The killing stunned people in this town of about 2,800 in the northwestern part of the state along the New York border.

"Everybody feels like they were violated and it makes us on edge," area resident Amy Hosier told WTNH-TV.
