State commission helps in typhoon relief

The Connecticut Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission is advising people looking to donate to the typhoon-relief efforts in the Philippines to consider a monetary donation first.

George Mathanool of Groton, a commission member, said the Philippine American Association of Connecticut is working with Operation Blessing Philippines to provide relief support for the country, which was hit hard today by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms on record.

"We are hoping the people of Connecticut open up their hearts and donate to relief efforts," Mathanool said. "We are here to help direct people to the best way they can provide assistance."

Mathanool said cash donations will be able to reach the Philippines more quickly than other types of aid and can help the country immediately start rebuilding.

The Philippine American Association of Connecticut is directing relief efforts in the state. Its number is (203) 248-4973.

People interested in more information should contact the Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission at (860) 240-0080.
