1st state count: Schools see 1,431 bullying cases
Hartford (AP) — In the first year when state law requires school districts to report bullying, 1,431 incidents have been documented in Connecticut.
Hearst Connecticut Newspapers reports that the numbers, broken down by district and school, account for all incidents in the 2012-13 school year in which a bullying incident was investigated.
John Frassinelli, a bureau chief with the state Department of Education, said schools and districts look at bullying differently. He says some may label incidents that increase their number and others may have higher thresholds.
The Connecticut Technical High School system reported the most incidents, 86, followed by Hartford at 71, New Haven at 74 and Bridgeport at 60.
State law requires bullying complaints to be investigated and documented. School employees must report bullying and share findings with parents of the bully and victim.
