Connecticut lawmakers unveil $200M pre-kindergarten plan

Hartford (AP) — Connecticut lawmakers are announcing what they're calling a historic 10-year, $200 million program for pre-kindergarten programs.

Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams Jr. and House Speaker Brendan Sharkey are expected to unveil the proposal Wednesday morning at the state Capitol with local school superintendents, teachers and other lawmakers.

Lawmakers say the proposal would provide pre-kindergarten opportunities for 50,000 children.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has proposed $11.5 million in his budget plan for more than 1,000 pre-kindergarten spots in the next fiscal year, with a priority for low-income children. He wants the state to have universal access to pre-kindergarten programs by the end of 2019.
