Morris (AP) — A Connecticut man has died after slipping under the surface of a lake where he remained for about an hour before he was pulled out.

WVIT-TV reports that 19-year-old Leonel Salvador, of New Milford was taking an afternoon dip in Morris' Bantam Lake when he slipped under off Point Folly shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday.

He was transported to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington and pronounced dead two hours later.

Bantam Fire Chief Ryan Litwin tells the Republican-American he was the first on the scene and that he saw people wading in the water, searching for the swimmer when he arrived. He was found about 50 yards from shore.

Police and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are investigating.
