At Hammonasset, other state parks, limited number of lifeguards on duty this Labor Day weekend

Visitors should be careful while swimming at state parks this Labor Day weekend, state officials warned, noting that only some will be staffed with lifeguards.

Lifeguards will be on duty at Black Rock State Park in Watertown, Silver Sands State Park in Milford and Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison from Saturday through Monday, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said in an email Friday.

No other parks will have lifeguards on duty — during what many consider to unofficially be the last weekend of summer.

And after Monday, there will be no lifeguards on duty at any state park for the remainder of 2022.

DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes advised that visitors be careful when taking to the waters this weekend.

"With the last summer days of swimming fast approaching, DEEP encourages everyone to enjoy the outdoors, and use sound judgment when swimming at Connecticut's state park beaches," said Dykes. "With a reduced number of lifeguards on duty as the summer winds down, remember to stay within designated swimming areas, watch your children, and don't swim if you've been consuming alcohol."

Officials noted that DEEP hired 90 employees this year to watch over swimming areas at eight state parks, as municipalities across the country wrangled with a shortage of available lifeguards.

"At this time of year, however, many lifeguards leave their positions to return to school, but DEEP maintains coverage wherever possible through Labor Day weekend," officials said.
