Lawmakers and gun control advocates in Connecticut are criticizing Brookfield First Selectwoman Tara Carr over tweets allegedly made on her account that use language often associated with gunfire in response to information about President Joe Biden.

Carr’s Twitter account had been suspended as of Monday afternoon but in a tweet that was still available to view earlier in the day posted on her account on Feb. 4, it said “Ready. Aim. Fire. One shot, one kill. That simple…” in response to other tweets about the president.

Lawmakers and gun control advocates in the state are calling for action from the Secret Service to investigate Carr’s alleged tweets.

State Rep. Matt Blumenthal, Stamford, said in a statement on Twitter that Carr’s behavior merits “a visit from the secret service and is incompatible with any position in public office or public trust.”

Blumenthal called Carr’s actions “Just completely unacceptable and beyond the pale.”

Carr’s office did not respond to requests for comment. Messages seeking comment also were left for Carr.

Po Murray, chairwoman of the Newtown-based gun control Newtown Action Alliance, also called on the Secret Service and FBI to investigate language used in tweets on Carr’s account. The organization said she should be held responsible, Murray said in a statement.

Murray, of Newtown, helped form the now national anti-gun violence organization following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in which 20 children and six educators were fatally shot in 2012 and is a staunch advocate against gun violence in Connecticut and in Washington, D.C.

Murray on Monday said she was calling on Republicans in Brookfield and across the state “to denounce” Carr’s tweet about President Biden “by demanding that she resign from her position as First Selectman.”

“Anyone who incites political violence against our POTUS cannot adequately govern,” said Murray.

Brookfield Democrats issued a statement on Monday, saying they were concerned about Carr’s tweets.

“Carr’s use of social media is irresponsible, dangerous, and sets a poor example for young people. She is divisive and chooses to peddle conspiracy theories, behavior unbecoming of a leader of this town,” the group said in their publicly shared statement.

The town Democrats also noted that Carr recently came before the Charter Revision Commission to request a chief of staff to help with her duties.

The Brookfield Democrats said they look forward to an investigation into Carr’s alleged tweets.

Connecticut Democrats on Twitter called Carr’s Twitter account “a den of conspiracy and snark.”

According to the town of Brookfield, Carr is actively serving as the town’s first selectwoman and a member of the Blight Committee.

The section of the town’s website that links to the first selectman’s office was offline Monday afternoon.
