Warrant: Man threatened to 'shoot everybody' at Burger King after dispute over coupon

Cromwell — A local man threatened to "shoot everybody" in the Burger King on Berlin Road while making racist comments after an argument with an employee over a coupon, an arrest warrant said.

Kenneth Currlin, 38, of Cromwell, was charged with second-degree threatening, second-degree breach of peace and second-degree intimidation based on bias or bigotry after police connected him with several phone threats made on April 8 to the restaurant, the warrant said.

A Burger King employee who called police around 1 p.m. on April 8 reported that a person she believed was an angry customer had called in a threat to "shoot everybody" in the restaurant, according to an arrest warrant.

The employee told police she and a male customer got into an argument over a coupon, and after she refused to help him, he drove up to the drive-thru window and made motions with his hand like he was pointing a gun, the warrant said. He also made "shooting" sounds as he was using the hand gesture to portray a firearm, the warrant said.

The man drove off after the woman gave him her "middle finger," the warrant stated.

A few minutes later, the phone at the restaurant rang several times, but the employee was busy with customers and did not pick up, the woman told police, according to the warrant.

When she did pick up the phone, she recognized the man's voice as the angry customer and he was yelling slurs and derogatory terms at her while saying he was "just going to come back and shoot everybody," the warrant said.

She hung up, but the person continued to call back with the caller ID name associated with the phone number listed as Kenneth Currlin, the warrant said.

The man called so many times the employee took the phone off the hook, the warrant said. The man left eight messages using racial slurs and reiterating that he hoped everyone in the store "died," the warrant said. At one point, he said, "I'll slice your throat and kill you all," according to the warrant.

Investigators called Currlin's number several times seeking to interview him, but he never called back, the warrant said. His voicemail was the same voice who had left the messages at the restaurant, according to the warrant.

Currlin was served with an arrest warrant on April 11 and held on $30,000 bond until he appeared in state Superior Court in Middletown on April 12. As a condition of his release on bond, Currlin was ordered not to possess any weapons or ammunition. He was ordered by a judge to stay away from the Burger King in Cromwell and seek an evaluation and treatment.

He is due back in court May 11, judicial records show.
