Conn. woman loses leg in shark attack

A Connecticut woman snorkeling in Turks and Caicos lost her leg during a shark attack on Wednesday.

The attack — which left the 22-year-old woman in “serious condition” — was reported at about 3:07 p.m. in the waters outside the Blue Haven Resort, according to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.

The woman, who was snorkeling with a friend, was taken to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre after an employee of the resort contacted authorities and reported that the victim’s leg was bitten off by a shark, requesting an ambulance respond to the scene, police said. The employee located the victim in the area of the Leeward Marina off the island of Providenciales, according to police.

The Turks and Caicos Islands is a small group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas, that are part of the British Overseas Territories.
