Masked robbers pistol-whip resident during home invasion, police say

Five people were arrested after police say they zip-tied residents and pistol-whipped one of them during a home invasion Saturday morning.

Middletown police did not immediately release the names of the five people arrested. Police said they will face charges that include home invasion, robbery, unlawful restraint, second-degree assault and theft of a firearm.

Police said they were called around 10:30 a.m. to the Wilcox Apartments to investigate a suspected home invasion. The caller reported seeing multiple masked men knocking on a neighbor's door and forcing entry when the occupant opened the door, police said. The caller then heard screaming in the apartment and called police.

When they arrived, police said officers saw men running from the building. Most of the suspects got into a maroon, older Cadillac DTS sedan and fled, police said. One of the men didn't make it to the vehicle before the driver pulled away, so he ran away but was apprehended a short distance away, police said.

Officers entered the apartment and determined that two residents and their guest were victims of a home invasion. One resident and the guest had just freed themselves after being zip-tied by the suspects, police said.

Officers learned that someone knocked on the apartment door and several men forced their way in, police said. One resident was struck in the head with a firearm after she refused demands to be zip-tied, police said.

The other resident and their guest were then forced into zip ties while the suspects stole items from the apartment, police said. Among the items reported stolen were jewelry, a firearm and other high-end valuables, according to police.

According to police, additional officers located the suspect vehicle on South Main Street. They pursued the Cadillac south on South Main Street into Durham, west on Route 22 in North Branford and north on Hartford Turnpike in North Haven.

The suspect's vehicle crashed into another vehicle in the area of 1500 Hartford Turnpike and then a guardrail, police said. When the suspect's vehicle stopped against the guardrail, police were able to block the car and prevent the suspects from driving away, police said.

The four suspects exited the Cadillac and attempted to run away and one of the officers in the pursuit deployed his K-9, police said. The K-9 stopped one of the men who was taken into custody. The three other men were arrested by officers without incident, police said.

Middletown officers said they located at least one gun, and it was determined to be the firearm stolen during the home invasion. All four men were transported to area hospitals to be evaluated for injuries sustained during the crash and arrest, police said. All are listed in stable condition, police said.

The North Haven Police Department is investigating the accident on Hartford Turnpike. The occupants of the second vehicle were not injured in the crash, police said.

Middletown police said the investigation is continuing.
