Wrong-way driver charged with DUI after collision on Route 8

State police have charged a wrong-way driver with driving under the influence after she was involved in a crash on Route 8 in Seymour on Sunday.

Troopers from Troop I responded to Route 8 South, just before Exit 20, around 12:30 a.m. on the report of a crash involving a wrong-way driver, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police said a 20-year-old Waterbury man, driving a 2012 Jeep Patriot south in the left lane, veered into the right lane to try to avoid a crash with a wrong-way driver in a 2006 Lexus RX330 but was unable to avoid a collision. The driver of the Lexus, identified as 55-year-old Heather Maton of Bethel, struck the front left quarter panel of the Jeep, causing minor damage, according to state police.

Maton did not report any injuries, state police said. The Jeep driver reported possible injuries but declined medical attention at the scene.

According to state police, Maton failed multiple field sobriety tests following the crash. She was taken into custody and charged with operating under the influence, traveling the wrong way on a divided highway and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Maton was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and is expected to be arraigned in Derby Superior Court on Feb. 16.
