Planet Fitness centers latest gyms to receive bomb threats

Fitness centers in Hamden and East Haven were evacuated on Thursday following the latest in a series of bomb threats made against the gym chain — marking the second time since last week the East Haven location received a bomb scare.

Bomb threats against Planet Fitness centers in both towns were received by the New Haven Police Department, according to the Hamden and East Haven police departments.

East Haven Police Capt. Joseph Murgo said in a statement that officers learned just after 4:15 p.m. that police in New Haven received an email from an unidentified sender that stated a bomb was planted at the Planet Fitness at 836 Foxon Road. The gym, surrounding businesses and nearby homes were evacuated until the New Haven police bomb squad could search the building.

According to Murgo, the threat was “unfounded.”

The Planet Fitness in Hamden, located at 2100 Dixwell Ave., was also evacuated Thursday after police in New Haven received the report of a bomb threat there, according to a statement issued by Lt. Raymond Quinn of the Hamden Police Department.

The building reopened a short time later after a search by the New Haven bomb squad turned up nothing suspicious, according to Quinn.

“There is no threat to the public at this time,” Quinn said.

According to Quinn, the Hamden incident is being investigated by Hamden and New Haven police with assistance from the FBI New Haven Office.

Anyone with information has been asked to call Hamden detectives at (203) 230-4000.

Murgo also said East Haven investigators are working with state and federal officials to determine the source of the threats.

“It should be noted that this is the second time in two weeks the East Haven Planet Fitness along with others in the region were evacuated because of bomb threats,” Murgo said, referring to last Thursday when evacuations took place after New Haven police were sent an email about a purported bomb being placed in the gym.

A search of the gym last week also turned up no threat.

“We believe the East Haven Planet Fitness location was one of many planet fitness locations affected in the area,” Murgo said last week.

Anyone with information on the incidents in East Haven has been asked to contact detectives there at (203) 468-3820.
