Conn. man issued summons after allegedly striking state police vehicle on Route 9

An Old Saybrook man was issued a summons after allegedly crashing into a state police sergeant on Route 9 in Middletown last week and taking off from the scene.

The sergeant was not injured in the crash, which occurred on Route 9 North prior to Exit 21 just before 8:30 a.m. last Friday, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police said the 58-year-old sergeant was driving an administrative police vehicle without lights or sirens equipped on it in the left lane when he slowed down for a crash up ahead. As he did, 30-year-old James Paternostro, who was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima behind the sergeant, tried to move into the right lane and allegedly hit the rear passenger side of the state police vehicle.

According to state police, Paternostro then took off from the scene.

Authorities later found him at his residence using the address from the vehicle’s registration. The Nissan, which was parked at the home, allegedly had minor damage that lined up with the crash earlier, state police said.

According to state police, Paternostro allegedly admitted to his involvement in the crash and was issued a summons charging him with following too closely resulting in a motor vehicle accident and evading responsibility. He is expected to answer to the charges on May 21 in Middletown Superior Court.
