Child, 2, seriously hurt in Clinton after falling out of SUV, police say

Clinton — A 2-year-old child was seriously injured after opening the door of a moving SUV on Sunnybrook Lane Tuesday afternoon, state police said.

Connecticut State Police said the Toyota Highlander was being driven by a 55-year-old Clinton resident with a 11-year-old passenger and toddler inside around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

While the vehicle was "negotiating a left curve," state police said the 2-year-old opened the rear door and the child fell out.

Police said the toddler was taken to the hospital, and the SUV's driver also was taken to the hospital for a possible injury.

"We can confirm Department did receive a report in regarding this terrible and tragic incident," the state Department of Children and Families spokesperson Ken Mysogland said. "We will be coordinating our response with Law Enforcement to understand fully what has transpired as well as offering trauma informed supports to the family."

Police did not have an update on the child's condition Wednesday morning.
