Deadline for Real ID is approaching. Here's what Conn. residents should know

Connecticut officials are using one of the busiest travel periods of the year to remind residents that at this time next year they will need to have a new form of identification if they want to fly domestically.

The new form of identification is called a REAL ID. Transportation Security Administration travel document checkers at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks are now handing travelers who currently do not possess a REAL ID a reminder notice to obtain one by visiting the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles.

There are 1.7 million Connecticut driver's license holders who have a REAL ID., which represents nearly 70 percent of all license holders in the state , according to DMV officials.

Here's what you need to know about why you need one:

    What is a REAL ID?

It is a verified driver's license or identification card that is a federally accepted form of identification, sometimes referred to as a verified ID. It complies with a higher level of security standards than a standard drivers license. This includes incorporating anti-counterfeiting technology, preventing insider fraud, and using documentary evidence and record checks to ensure a person is who he or she claims to be.

Do I need to get a REAL ID?

Getting a REAL ID is optional. If you already have a Connecticut license or ID card, getting your identity verified through the DMV isn't required.

The Transportation Security Administration will also accept other identity documents at the airport, such as a passport. But after May 7, 2025, if you only have a standard Connecticut driver's license you will no longer be able to fly domestically without a passport.

How do I know if I already have a REAL ID?

Licenses that are REAL IDs have a gold star in the upper right corner of the license.

What happens if I don't have a passport or REAL ID?

When you reach the point at the airport post-May 7, 2025 where TSA agents check your airline ticket and identification, you will be turned away and will not be able to advance to the security screening check point.

What is the process for getting a Real ID?

To get the REAL ID star, you will need to visit the local Connecticut DMV office in person. You will need to bring certain documents to prove U.S. citizenship and Connecticut residency. The required documents include one proof of identity (passport or U.S. birth certificate), proof of legal presence for non-U.S. citizens, two proofs of Connecticut residency, your social security card (if you've been issued one) and a current driver's license if you are applying to exchange one issued by another U.S. state.

Do I need an appointment when I go to get my REAL ID?

You will need to make an appointment at your local DMV service location. The DMV offers a downloadable checklist of the information that you will need to have with you on the agency's website.

What is the cost of a REAL ID?

There is no extra cost if you get it at time your license or ID card come due for renewal, according to DMV officials. If you are not renewing and want to obtain a REAL ID verified license or ID card, you will be charged a one-time $30 fee.

How long does it take to get a REAL ID?

Up to 20 business days, once the credential is mailed.

What is the history of the REAL ID?

It was created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced a plan for ensuring the safety of all Americans. The Federal REAL ID Act of 2005 was passed by Congress and created this requirement.

The Connecticut DMV started offering this verification in October 2011 so that everyone had an opportunity at renewal time to get the verification prior to the deadline next May.

Does REAL ID serve a purpose beyond its use for domestic air travel?

It will also be required to gain entry to a secure federal facility or military base. When planning a visit to a federal facility or military base, visitors should contact the facility to determine what identification will be accepted.

How is the REAL ID different than a U.S. Passport?

REAL ID card holders can board federally regulated commercial aircraft flying domestically. REAL ID cards cannot be used for border crossings into Canada, Mexico or other international travel.

Travelers will need a U.S. Passport to travel internationally, however a U.S. passport can be used in lieu of a REAL ID for domestic travel.
