Connecticut man, 19, charged in hit-and-run of Rhode Island police officer, officials say

Coventry, R.I. — A 19-year-old Connecticut man has been charged in connection with the hit-and-run of a Rhode Island cop Tuesday evening, according to police.

Ryland Roy of Thompson was at a bike path near Lewis Farm Road around 9 p.m. when officers responded to the area to "disperse a party," according to police.

Once officers began approaching the group, police said Roy struck an officer with his car and sped off, heading toward Connecticut.

Police said the officer was transported to the hospital for injuries, but the severity of those injuries was not disclosed.

Witnesses and an investigation led to Roy being identified as the driver involved in the incident, according to police. After Roy was identified as the suspect, an extraditable warrant was issued for his arrest, police added.

Police said Connecticut State Police took Roy into custody Wednesday, and he would be brought to Rhode Island to be charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon.

An investigation into the hit-and-run remains active, and police said additional charges may be filed pending investigation.
