Driver gets more than 4 years in cyclist's hit-and-run death

NEW HAVEN — A Connecticut driver who was drunk when she struck and killed a bicyclist before fleeing the scene has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.

The New Haven Register reports that that 43-year-old Veronica Pierce was sentenced Wednesday to four years and four months behind bars and five years of probation after pleading guilty to charges including second-degree manslaughter.

Police say she struck and killed Ranko Borak in New Haven in April 2017. Investigators say the Southbury woman fled the scene and continued driving recklessly. When police found her, her blood alcohol level was found to be more than twice the legal limit to drive.

Pierce apologized at her sentencing hearing, saying she was "broken" by the experience.
