Charter school shuts down amid enrollment investigation
HARTFORD — A Connecticut charter school that was under investigation for discrepancies in student records and enrollment is shutting down.
State Education Commissioner Dianna Wentzell announced Tuesday Path Academy has surrendered its charter, and it will cease operations for the upcoming school year.
The State Board of Education had voted in May to start the process of revoking the Willimantic school's charter after a state investigation found the discrepancies in enrollment could have led to an overpayment of $1.5 million over two years.
A spokesman for the state education department says the state is actively looking into recovering the potential overpayment.
The chief executive officer of the charter's management organization, Enid Rey, tells the Hartford Courant they decided to surrender the charter because the state set "unattainable" conditions for continued operation.
