Maine school district to test 'remote school days' during winter

ROCKLAND, Maine (AP) — Kids in one Maine school district may have to cut their fun in the snow short this year.

The Bangor Daily News reports officials in the combined Five Town Community School District and School Administration District 28 say they are testing a pilot program to replace two snow days with "remote school days."

Students in the Knox County district will be expected to complete assignments online or work on projects that would be due when they return.

Teachers will hold office hours to assist students, and the district will provide a wireless hotspot to students who do not have internet access at home.

Assistant Superintendent Debra McIntyre says the Maine Department of Education will monitor the results of the program.

Similar programs are in place in Illinois, Minnesota and Massachusetts.
