Connecticut zoo receives $1 million gift for tiger habitat

BRIDGEPORT (AP) — Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo says it has received $1 million from a longtime zoo supporter to fund the creation of a new habitat for a family of tigers.

Zoo Director Gregg Dancho says the donation is from Pamela Hope Kochiss-Werth and will go toward the creation of a new habitat for the endangered Amur tigers. The Connecticut Post reports this is the first grant made by Kochiss-Werth's new foundation, and says it reflects her individual philanthropy.

Tiger cubs Zeya and Reka had only a 25 percent chance of survival when they were born last year. The Amur tiger — also known as the Siberian tiger — is an endangered species of tiger native to eastern regions of Russia and northeastern China.
