Providence has its first homicide of 2019

PROVIDENCE (AP) — Providence police are investigating the city's first homicide of 2019.

The department says a man was shot and killed early Saturday, around 1:15 a.m., in the Valley neighborhood. The victim was a 41-year-old Providence resident.

As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made. The investigation is ongoing.

In a written statement, City Councilman Michael Correia says he has heard from multiple concerned neighbors of the Steam Tap bar on Andem Street, near where the man was killed. He says it's not the first violent incident at the location and he's working with city officials and community residents to make sure the bar is closed until the Providence Board of Licenses holds a full hearing regarding the incident.

He says the safety of residents is paramount.
