Waterbury school board member faces multiple charges

WATERBURY (AP) — A member of a Connecticut school board and her husband are facing charges after authorities intercepted more than 5 pounds of cocaine.

The Republican-American reports that Waterbury Board of Education member Melissa Adorno faces money laundering, forgery and other charges.

Authorities began investigating after a shipping facility alerted them to a package that originated from a suspicious address in California.

Police say Adorno’s husband, Victor, attempted to retrieve the package under an alias.

Investigators say Melissa Adorno had access to 11 bank accounts, deposited more than $86,000 in 2018, but reported less than $25,000 in income.

Adorno’s lawyer says the charges are “ridiculous,” and Adorno is being pressured because of the investigation into her husband.

Victor Adorno is facing drug and money laundering charges. His attorney says he’s innocent.
