4 officers opened fire when suspect rammed cruiser

STRATFORD (AP) — Police videos released Tuesday show Connecticut officers firing a hail of bullets that killed a home invasion suspect who had rammed a police cruiser and exited his car while trying to escape a traffic stop last week.

Four of the six Stratford officers involved in Friday's traffic stop shot at Christopher Hagans, 36, who died from his injuries, according to a preliminary report also released Tuesday by Hartford State's Attorney Sharmese Walcott.

Officers at the scene said Hagans had a gun, and a firearm was found on the ground next to him after he was shot, Walcott said. The report does not say whether Hagans fired the gun.

The officers who fired their guns were identified as Lt. Robert Rosenbaum, Detective Glynn McGlynn, Officer Stephen Santoro and Officer Lawrence Overby.

At the time of the shooting, Stratford police were helping Naugatuck police in serving an arrest warrant on Hagans on charges including home invasion and strangulation.

Police body cameras and dashboard cameras show the officers firing several shots when Hagans rammed the police cruiser, and firing many more shots when he got out of the car.

Walcott is investigating whether officers were justified in the shooting.
