UConn's Tuesday game will change after Vandy withdraws

When UConn coach Dan Hurley ended his post-game press conference on Friday, he signed off by saying, "See you at Mohegan."

Since then, UConn has had its Legends Classic schedule altered due to Tuesday's semifinal opponent Vanderbilt reportedly withdrawing from the event for COVID-related reasons.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Gazelle Group, which run Bubbleville at the Mohegan Sun, announced on Sunday that the Legends Classic schedule has changed and will be updated in the near future.

As of early Sunday evening, the new schedule had yet to be announced.

Villanova will face Hartford at 5 p.m. Tuesday when UConn and Vanderbilt were supposed to play.

Since the Mohegan Sun started hosting Bubbleville last week, event organizers have had to scramble to replace teams that pulled out due to COVID-19 related issues. So expect UConn to be matched up with another team in its Legends Classic opener.

BYU and USC are the other two teams in the Legends Classic field.

The Legends Classic championship and consolation games are scheduled to be played on Thursday but that could also change.

In other non-conference games, the Huskies are supposed to play North Carolina State at noon on Saturday at the Mohegan Sun.

But nothing is set in stone.

UConn has yet to list the North Carolina State game on its schedule. But North Carolina State has the non-conference meeting on its website.

After Friday's win over Hartford, Hurley shared some concerns about UConn playing three games this week, making it five games in 11 days to open the season. Earlier this month, the Huskies had a 14-day pause due to a positive COVID-19 test, losing valuable practice time. They returned to practice on Nov. 19.

"I just want to see how they look physically (Saturday) in terms of just how they feel," Hurley said on Friday. "If they look good and they feel good, then we'll go into the gauntlet next week. But we've got to care about their well-being and health. We don't want to see some type of brutal injury because we played five games in 11 days."

UConn is off a 2-0 start this season after beating Central Connecticut State University, 102-75, Wednesday and defeating Hartford, 69-57, on Friday. Both games were at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.

Hurley was unhappy about his team's play in both games. He criticized the Huskies for their uninspired defense in the opener and called them out for a lack of maturity in game two.

He added that there's a lot to fix before beginning Big East play against St. John's on Dec. 11.

"We're going to learn a lot of really, really hard lessons during these games," Hurley said.

Jeff Goodman, a basketball analyst at The Stadium, first reported the news of Vanderbilt's withdrawal from the Legends Classic.
