New London Self Storage donates to non-profit to help keep kids off the street.
New London Self Storage is donating one of its large storage spaces to Heavy Hitters USA, to help the non-profit organization store its mobile boxing ring, mats and other gear. Heavy Hitters does fund raising events at sites around the greater New London area, and "needed to store the equipment somewhere that was easily accessible," according to organization Director Kent Ward. But finding funds in the budget was a challenge.
"Both Kent and I feel the strong sense of urgency in helping kids," says Len Goldstein, owner of New London Self Storage, "and I witnessed that need when we had a business in the same building as Heavy Hitters in New London. We saw these kids walk in off the streets, some of them following their older siblings inside. If they didn't have this program, these kids would have sought out drugs, alcohol or worse. And this is why we are donating a 10' x 25'space, 250 sq. ft., to this worthy cause."
According to Ward, "We see these kids walking the street with nowhere to go, no one at home, just looking for something, anything. And we open our doors to them." Heavy Hitters provides after-school and early evening wrestling, boxing and conditioning programs for kids and young adults from New London and surrounding towns. "The hours between 3 and 6PM are critical, when kids need homework help, tutors, and mentors. We help provide guidance and mentoring with constructive stimulating activities that increase confidence and self-awareness, enhance self-esteem, develop trust in relationships and encourage achievement at home, in school and within the community."
The work that Heavy Hitters USA does is more important than ever amid reports that dropout rates are approaching 50% in some American communities. As many as 15 million children leave school with no place to go other than the streets. Denzel Washington, actor and spokesperson for Boys & Girls Clubs of America, says, "We need to mobilize adults to provide those kids with the daily nagging and nurturing they need. Our children today are going where we lead them. We have a national crisis on our hands, but if every one of us gets involved, we can make a difference."
