Connecticut College Music Faculty to Perform "Knoxville: Summer of 1915"

On Friday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. the Connecticut College Music Department presents "'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' and More," a concert in Evans Hall involving fifteen faculty performers. Works include Samuel Barber's rhapsodic "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" and Benjamin Britten's "Sinfonietta," both of which are large chamber works that will be conducted by Assistant Professor Mark Seto. "Knoxville" will feature acclaimed soprano Jūratė Švedaitė-Waller as the soloist; the lyrics for the work are based on a nostalgic text by James Agee. "Sinfonietta" (Britten's first published work) offers a fascinating glimpse into the young composer, which is particularly fitting this year as we celebrate the centenary of his birth. The program will also feature James McNeish performing "Recuerdos de l'Alhambra," an astonishing virtuosic piece for classical guitar by Spanish composer Francisco Tarrega. Megan Sesma (harp) and Theodore Arm (violin) will perform Saint-Saens's Fantaisie, Op. 124, a passionate, lyrical, and virtuosic work with a distinct Spanish flavor that evokes the composer's love of the Mediterranean. Thomas Labadorf (clarinet) and Mark McCormick (bass) will perform Morton Gould's duo "Benny's Gig," the first seven movements of which were written for Benny Goodman’s ground-breaking tour of the Soviet Union in 1962. The last movement was added 1979 to commemorate Goodman’s 70th birthday. A note written by Gould accompanied it. In it he said, “After all – how many Benny Goodmans are there, at any age – or in any age.” Tickets are $10 general admission; $5 seniors and students.
