Songs in the Attic takes on the legacy of The Piano Man

Dave Clark of Songs in the Attic (Contributed)

For pretty obvious reasons, "tribute" bands are frequently named after a song or album recorded by the artist they're honoring. Strutter does a Kiss homage, The Musical Box replicates Genesis, and so on.

Sometimes, funny puns are involved — as with the all-babe Iron Maidens, for example, or the hilariously named Alcoholica (long-sober Metallica front man James Hetfield notwithstanding).

If you were going to take out a Billy Joel tribute show, what would you call it? ? The Nylon Curtains? The Big Shots? Christie's Ex?

More important in these situations is whether the band can pull it off. In the case of David Clark, his Joel tribute act, Songs in the Attic, is frankly stunning. Personally, it wouldn't surprise me if Clark and Songs in the Attic actually played four or five of those 10 sold-out Joel shows in the Mohegan Sun Arena in 2008.

Well, now's your chance to see Songs in the Attic in the classic summer setting. Clark brings his band — including actual Joel saxophonist Richie Cannata — to Ocean Beach Park Friday for a performance. Hey, we're all in the mood for a melody, right? Might as well hear it right on the shore of New England's finest seaside park.

Songs in the Attic, 8 p.m. Friday, Ocean Beach Park, 98 Neptune Ave., New London; $7 per car; (860) 447-3031.
