The Fray hits Foxwoods for Sunday concert

Dave Welsh of the band The Fray. (Owen Sweeney, Invision/AP)

On a cynical day, I like to dream of appropriating that IBM computer Watson and make it listen to the following bands and try to figure out which is which: Parachute. Matchbox 20. Coldplay. The Fray. Tonic. Making April. Those "Drops of Jupiter" people. Keene. And many more "modern rock/AOR" titans.

In my brain, I see Watson's algorithms spin faster and faster in confusion and smoke and sparks start shooting out as the horrified IBM technicians race around trying to figure out why their machine is self-destructing and somewhere Ken Jennings is laughing and ...

Truth told, all of the aforementioned acts are very pleasant sounding, and each has loyal fans who would bristle at this commentary. Take The Fray, for example. Over 12 years and four studio recordings, The Fray has churned out hits such as "Over My Head (Cable Car)," "How to Save a Life," "You Found Me," "Heartbeat" and "Love Don't Lie" — all of which have toothpaste-bright, sing-along choruses and a sincerity of craft and emotion that earns loyalty. See the band and their fine live presentation when they play Foxwood's Grand Theater on Sunday.

    The Fray, 7 p.m. Sunday, Grand Theater, Foxwoods; $40 and $55; 1-800-200-2882.
