Harp Day concert offered in New London

Well, this isn’t your same-ol’-same-ol’ concert.

More than 40 harpists, ages 7 to 75, are gathering at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Saturday for New England Harp Day. During the day, the harpists will attend workshops.

Then, at 4 p.m., they’ll give a public performance at the academy’s Leamy Concert Hall, followed by Katherine Siochi, gold medalist of the 2016 USA Harp Competition. (Yes, there’s a USA Harp Competition.) On hand, too, will be Haley Hewitt, winner of the 2013 Scottish Harp Society of America’s National Championship.

Conductors for the concert will include Lieutenant Commander Adam Williamson, Chief Warrant Officer Richard Wyman, and harpist Robbin Gordon-Cartier from the East Orange School District.

It’s important to note: Chief Musician Megan Sesma, who is principal harpist for the Coast Guard Band, hosts New England Harp Day.

New England Harp Day Ensemble, 4 p.m. Saturday, Leamy Concert Hall, Coast Guard Academy, 15 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; (860) 701-6826.
