Daddy Yankee, who had the song of the summer, comes to Foxwoods

Daddy Yankee was already no slouch when it came to being a music icon, considering he’s a Reggaeton pioneer and all. But he upped even his own game the past few months by being part of the summer’s uber hit “Despacito.”

Daddy Yankee collaborated with Luis Fonsi on the song. It proved immensely popular since it was released in January but hit new heights when Justin Bieber joined in for a remix. Both versions are primarily sung in Spanish.

The tune sat atop the Billboard charts for 16 weeks. It was the most streamed song, according to Spotify, of the summer, with more than 786 million streams around the world.

TIME magazine wrote that “Despacito” “heralds a new era of globalized hits when foreign-language tracks can succeed in English-dominated markets. The label ‘world music’ used to evoke the kind of soundtrack that accompanies couples' massage. A success like ‘Despacito’ makes it clear the genre has since been transformed.”

It’s not only the record that’s gone gangbusters; the video has become the most-watched video ever and was the first to reach more than three billion views on YouTube.

All this means: you can bet you’ll hear “Despacito” alongside all of Daddy Yankee’s earlier hits when he performs in concert Saturday at Foxwoods.

Daddy Yankee, 8 p.m. Saturday, Foxwoods’ Grand Theater; $58-$150; 1-800-200-2882.
