5 Seconds of Summer come to Mohegan Sun

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) have straddled the line between pop-boy group and full-on punk band for years now, and with the release of their third studio album, "Youngblood," the Australian mates seem to have finally stepped decisively into punk. It has been 5SOS’s mission since their debut album in 2014 not to be categorized as a "boy band," such as One Direction and 98 Degrees. To them, it was about being accessible to all genders and age groups, not just screaming middle and high school girls (tween girls cannot help but swoon over the looks of Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford and Ashton Irwin).

"Youngblood" brings a more mature vibe, with deep rhythms and uncensored lyrics. 5SOS has come a long way since their beginning in 2011, when the three original members, Hemmings, Hood and Clifford, uploaded covers of Justin Bieber and Chris Brown to YouTube.

Now, with the addition of Irwin on drums, the band is touring the world and has had two albums reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the only band to do so in history. 5SOS will be performing at Mohegan Sun Wednesday as part of their Meet You There tour, bringing their Australian swagger and punk vibes with them.

    5 Seconds of Summer, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $39.50-$59.50; 1-800-745-3000.
