Fish-eating vegetarian an oxymoron at best

We love reading the dining-out section in Night & Day, as it gives us new ideas for restaurants to explore.

Yet, about halfway through the restaurant review titled "A unique mix at Morning Glory Cafe in Old Lyme," published March 25, the reviewer Katie Warchut wrote that the haddock sandwich "presented a problem for the vegetarian in the group." The problem, however, was not the haddock, but bacon in the sauce.

This presents a problem for me, as even the not-so-reliable Wikipedia will list fish as an option only in semi-vegetarian diets.

Fish have eyes to see, a brain to process information, extremities to provide mobility and a heart that pumps fluids through their bodies to sustain life. These traits are not shared with anything else in the vegetable kingdom, but are most common in the animal world.

Ms. Warchut and her vegetable-friendly companion are doing a disservice to those of us with more selective diets.

Please find an alternate term for someone who eats fish but not meat - pescetarian? flexitarian? - so that true vegetarians have less uphill battling to do when dining out. We've seen fewer vegetarian options on local menus and would appreciate some help to reverse this trend.
