Deep River - The season to remember for the Valley Regional/Old Lyme football team reached its regular season apex on Wednesday night.

Valley scored the game's final 27 points and defeated Haddam-Killingworth, 33-7 to sew up the school's first perfect regular season in history.

Quarterback Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn ran for five touchdowns for the Warriors (10-0), who had already won their third Pequot Conference championship - and first since 1988 - in the Sassacus Division after last week's win over Hyde Leadership of New Haven.

"It's been unbelievable," Valley coach Tim King said. "It's been a great ride and now we're looking to keep it going. It's a cliche I've said a billion times, but we've been taking it one game at a time."

The Warriors had already clinched a Class S playoff berth for the first time since the program began in 1968, as well as a home quarterfinal game on Tuesday. Their opponent will be known following today's games.

Last Thanksgiving, King and his coaches were putting away equipment before eating dinner with family following a 6-4 season. This year?

"Ansonia," King said when asked his Thanksgiving Day plans, referring to going to watch today's Ansonia-Naugatuck game and a potential Class S playoff opponent. "In the past, we'd maybe watch a local game and have dinner. Now we're game-planning and scouting. We have practice Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. We're ready to roll again. It's a great thing for the community and the town and the schools and the kids. It shows that you can come from a little school and have success if you work hard and these kids have worked hard."

Friday's win was also impressive after a short week following Friday's win over defending Class S champion Hyde, Valley's first over the Howling Wolves in 14 years.

"We've never been in some of these situations, so we really don't know how to act," King said. "The kids are like, 'We won. All right. What's next?'"

Fairfield-Sonn ran for 137 yards on 24 carries and was 7-for-15 passing for 115 yards. John Finkeldey ran 11 times for 103 yards and Taylor Rioux caught five passes for 79 yards for Valley.

College awards

• Six Connecticut College student-athletes were named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference all-sportsmanship team.

Brenner Green (men's cross country), Isaac Hancock (men's soccer), Kirsten Manville (women's soccer), Molly Pistrang (women's cross country), Liz Rosenfeld (field hockey) and Katie Shragge (volleyball) were the recipients.
