USPS closes Yantic post office, citing safety and security concerns

Norwich – The Yantic Post Office is closed indefinitely after U.S. Postal Service officials found deficiencies in safety and security and called an emergency suspension of services Monday, a post office spokesperson said in a press release.

Post office box customers at the 131 Yantic Road facility can pick up their mail at the Bozrah Post Office, at 181 Fitchville Road. That facility is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturday, the Bozrah office is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Postal officials will review the condition of the Yantic Post Office to determine the best course of action for the future of that office, the spokesperson said. An emergency suspension can occur at the discretion of postal management because of a natural disaster, eviction, safety or serious health issue or if the facility is in substandard conditions, the spokesperson said. The USPS did not specify the exact reason for the Yantic facility's closure.

An emergency suspension is not a decision to permanently close a post office, the spokesperson said, but it does automatically trigger a formal study on whether a post office should be discontinued. That study looks at several issues including office workload, customer demand and availability of alternatives. A timeline for the study has not yet been determined.

Yantic P.O. box users will automatically have their mail moved to the Bozrah facility, 1.3 miles away.
