    Qimin Liu retrospective opens Saturday

And I thought the culture shock of moving from the south to New England was drastic. Imagine Qimin Liu, the artist whose formative years in Communist China presented one set of impressions that contrast staggeringly with his experiences in America since he immigrated here in 1991.

A retrospective of three decades of work, "Qimin Liu: A Journey of Art and Redemption," reflects his social and psychological evolution in vibrant, colorful and deeply impressionable fashion - as with his "Self-portrait with cigarette," shown here. The exhibit is in New London's Provenance Center at 165 State St. and kicks off with an artist's reception at 7 p.m. Saturday. Show runs through April 14. Hours 2-6:30 p.m. Wed., 1-5 p.m. Thurs. and Fri., or by appointment; (860) 535-2774, provenancecenter.com.
