    Peru Project

Working with Children in Costa Rica in 2009.

My name is Anastasia Taylor and I am a student at Northeastern University studying International Affairs and Human Services with a specialization in Social Entrepreneurship.

On August 18th I will be traveling to Cuzco, Peru to teach English and work in an orphanage for 4 months. I will be placed at an impoverished school and a shelter for street children. Cuzco is the tourism capital of South America and therefore the majority of Cusquenan children will tell you that they want to be a tourist guide when they grow up. They are also aware that this dream requires a high level of English and are therefore very excited to learn English with native speakers.

My second job will be working at an orphanage. Many children at the orphanage and schools do not receive the level of affection and education that they deserve. Therefore I will play an important role in working alongside local staff to improve the education quality, emotional environment, and hygiene conditions for the children.

Cuzco is one of the oldest cities on the Continent. I will be living with a Peruvian family and learning about the people and culture. This experience will allow me to grow as a future humanitarian aid worker.

In deprived areas away from tourist sites children are forced to beg on streets to support their families and find food. The hard truth of being a Peruvian child living in Cuzco is that your needs and development are overlooked. In my time in Peru I plan to observe how this sort of cycle can be broken and to understand new ways of community development.

I am raising money to help cover my volunteer expenses, as well as, bring over school supplies, vitamins, and basic medical supplies that are needed in schools and orphanages.

I will be completing this project through an organization called International HQ which can be viewed online through their website.

Please consider my cause and feel free to contact me with more questions about my project and goals in Peru.
