Stonington — The Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance are slated to meet Sept. 5 to discuss holding a referendum vote this fall on a proposal to bond approximately $5.5 million to pay for improvements to the athletic fields behind the high school and repairs to town roads.

The Athletic Fields Task Force has recommended a $2 million project that calls for installing artificial turf on the football field, making repairs to the existing grass fields and  making other improvements to the athletic complex. First Selectman Ed Haberek said he will also discuss the maintenance of the new fields at the meeting.

The task force was formed because the softball, all-purpose, soccer and field hockey fields all flood. Rocks stick up from the football practice field, while the soccer and football fields are uneven and have bare patches.

The problems have been exacerbated by heavy use of the fields, not just by high school teams but by recreation programs, youth teams, residents and outside groups.

The Public Works department meanwhile is proposing to spend $3.5 to repair and repave roads.

Both boards need to approve sending the bonding plan to a referendum vote.
