Michael Young of the Rangers waves to fans before a game on Aug. 11. Young, reportedly, has been traded to the Phillies.

Michael Young chose a full-time role over staying home.

A person familiar with the trade said the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired the seven-time All-Star infielder from the Texas Rangers for two relief pitchers.

Young agreed to waive his no-trade clause on Saturday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been announced. The Rangers also will pay a significant portion of Young's salary for 2013. Young is due to earn $16 million, and reports stated the Phillies will pay him only about $6 million of it.

Young, who has spent all 12 of his seasons in the majors with the Rangers, leaves as the club's career leader in hits (2,230) and other categories, including runs, doubles and triples. He has a .301 career average with 177 homers, 984 RBIs and a .347 on-base percentage.

The Phillies sent right-hander Josh Lindblom and minor league righty Lisalverto Bonilla to the Rangers to get Young, who fills a void at third base. Lindblom was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 31 for two-time All-Star center fielder Shane Victorino.

Young batted .277 with eight homers and 67 RBIs in 2012, a down year for him. In the nine previous seasons, Young hit at least .300 seven times and averaged 17 homers and 90 RBIs.

A former AL Gold Glove winner at shortstop, Young hasn't play third base regularly since 2010. Seven Phillies started at third base last year, including often-injured former All-Star Placido Polanco.

Young was a leader on a Rangers team that reached the World Series in 2010 and 2011.

He agreed to the trade rather than accept a utility role in Texas.

AP source: Ludwick, Reds reach $15M, 2-year deal

A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that free agent outfielder Ryan Ludwick is returning to the Cincinnati Reds for a two-year contract worth $15 million.

The person spoke Saturday under condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement about the agreement.

The 34-year-old Ludwick hit .275 with 26 home runs and 80 RBIs while helping Cincinnati win the NL Central. He hit three homers and batted .333 in the Reds' five-game loss to San Francisco in the NL division series.

Ludwick declined a mutual option after the season, turning down a $5 million salary and instead receiving a $500,000 buyout.

He had signed a one-year deal with a $2 million base salary for 2012, and earned another $350,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances.

Mariners officially signs Jason Bay to 1-year deal

The Seattle Mariners have finalized their one-year contract with outfielder Jason Bay that was agreed upon earlier this week during baseball's winter meetings.

The Mariners announced the deal on Saturday. General manager Jack Zduriencik says he was happy to be able to bring Bay back to the Pacific Northwest and hopefully revitalize a career that floundered the past three seasons with the New York Mets.

Bay hit just 26 homers and played in only 288 games in his three seasons in New York due to injuries.

He was a three-time All-Star in previous stops with Pittsburgh and Boston, and is a low risk move for the Mariners.

Bay's contract with the Mets was terminated last month, but he is still getting paid the $21 million he was owed.
