The Eastern Connecticut Conference announced Monday night the cancellation of its 2013 wrestling tournament.

The event, originally scheduled for last Friday and Saturday, was going to be completed in one day (today) at Fitch High School and scaled back to eight wrestlers in each weight class.

But after learning a number of its member institutions would not have school again today, and with the CIAC class championship tournaments scheduled to begin on Friday, ECC officials decided holding the event this year was not possible.

The decision means Ledyard wins the Large Division title and Windham the Small Division crown. Results from the league tournament would have helped decide the division champions.

"There are four schools that are not in school tomorrow and if they don't go to school, they can't wrestle," ECC spokesperson Jan Voland said. "That's four schools that couldn't wrestle."

The league had pushed the tournament back as far as it could before getting too close to the state tournaments. Other conferences, such as the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference and Southern Connecticut Conference, decided Sunday to cancel their respective tournaments.

Voland, the Plainfield High School athletic director, couldn't recall the ECC having to cancel its wrestling tourney.

"I asked someone about that today, and they couldn't remember it," Voland said.

Men's basketball

• Dylan Haines made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points and five rebounds as St. Thomas More beat South Kent 88-71 to clinch first place in the NEPSAC. Marquis Moore had 10 points and five assists for T-More and Duane Notice scored 12.

Women's basketball

• Rebecca Resor had 14 points and eight rebounds as Merchant Marine beat Coast Guard 62-53. Sara Ellenberger had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Merchant Marine (11-12) and Demi VanDerWal scored 13. Kaitlin Ward had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bears (9-13) and Meghan Fornaro added 14 points and five steals.

Men's hockey

• Hamilton College scored five goals in the third period, including four just 3 minutes, 31 seconds apart, to rout Connecticut College 7-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Hamilton (6-13-3, 4-10-3) is in seventh place in the NESCAC standings while Conn (7-12-3, 3-10-2) remains three points ahead of Colby for the eighth and final NESCAC playoff berth The Camels visit Colby on Friday night.

Sebastian Meltzer, Sean Murray and Keith Veronesi scored goals for Conn and goalie Mike Petchonka made 34 saves.
