Jaye Wilson will be missed at the Winthrop School

As a substitute teacher who worked almost exclusively for Jaye Wilson for more than two years, I am saddened, though not surprised, to hear of her retirement as principal of Winthrop STEM Elementary Magnet School in New London.

Jaye accepted the neediest students in the district (those the others wanted off their rolls lest they affect the almighty CMT scores) with open arms and an open heart. She understood the needs of not only her student population, but of her teachers as well.

I have had three exceptional bosses in my 42 years: my editor at the now defunct Book-of-the-Month Club in New York, my Peace Corps trainer/supervisor in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Principal Jaye Wilson.

She inspired me to do my best every day with her support, encouragement and advice.

Finally, I happen to agree with board member Jason Catala. The New London School District, once again, failed to consider any viable candidates not previously associated with the city of New London.

What a shame. It's a buyer's market out there for employers; the district might have very well attracted some real talent.

I wish nothing but the best for the new principal, Michelle Han, her teachers, and the students of Winthrop School.
