The buzz has been building about Zagat-rated Five Guys Burgers and Fries making its way to Branford Hill (West Main Street).
The area's already known locally as "Hamburger Hill" due to its proliferation of fast-food restaurants.
On June 6, Branford's Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) formally approved a request for building permits to construct the latest of the Washington D.C.-based burger chain restaurants, to be located at 803-873 West Main Street, in a renovated retail building adjancent to the site of the former Meinke Muffler Shop.
The following details are from the June 6, 2013 PZC minutes:
"Bernie Pellegrino Jr. Esq., of the Pellegrino Law Firm, Pat Rose, AIA, of Rose Tiso & Co, LLC. and J. Morruzzi, of JMM Properties presented the application to the commission and public. B.Pellegrino highlighted the proposal. A new building is to be constructed where the old Meineke Muffler shop was located in the commercial plaza and an existing retail structure will be renovated for a proposed restaurant (5 Guys Burgers).
B. Pellegrino highlighted the proposed improvements to the plaza including better circulation off of Orchard Hill Road, completion of sidewalks along West Main Street, improved building aesthetics, and improved site features. R. Stoecker highlighted the staff report including the request for parking modifications allowed by Section 6.5. I (1), need for an isolux lighting plan, proposed drainage improvement recommended by the Town Engineer, in ground 1,000 gallon grease trap, and elevations and floor plan for renovated building to be used as restaurant. Commission member M. Palluzzi, asked about any additional landscaping that may be appropriate for Orchard Hill Road, West Main Street and in front proposed outdoor dining area. Members of the public commented on the plans."
