Ryan/Rand philosophy is far from mainstream

Paul Ryan, the Republican candidate for vice president in 2012 and the libertarian budget "nerd," is a big fan of Ayn Rand.

In 2005 Ryan stated, "The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand."

Ayn Rand is the author of "Atlas Shrugged." In 1961 author Gore Vidal, in assessing her philosophy, put it this way, "She has an enticing prescription: altruism is the root of all evil, self-interest is the only good, and if you're dumb or incompetent that's your lookout."

The Ayn Rand libertarian Republicans believe in and foster the goal of little or no government. In this view average workers are "takers" (remember Romney's 47 percent?); people or government has no obligation to help the less fortunate; unrestricted free enterprise (no regulations) is desireable; unions must be eliminated; and voting restricted to those judged "worthwhile."

Our great country is better than this!
